Avoid their charges by using other companies such as lner.co.uk (20% discount on advance tickets for a group of three or more if booked on their site) or tpexpress.co.uk (50% discount on tickets on their own services bought in advance for 16-25 railcard holders, 3.4% cashback on their own tickets through www.topcashback.co.uk).

To potentially save money, use trainsplit.com to see if you can pay less by splitting the journey. Enter your journey details and get up the fare options, then select a fare and click on 'Proceed'. However, if you buy the tickets through the site they take a cut of 10% of any saving, so make a note of  the ticket breakdown and then buy the tickets on another site.
