Never, ever, use Trainline to buy train tickets. Avoid their charges by using other companies such as lner.co.uk (20% discount on advance tickets for a group of three or more if booked on their site) or tpexpress.co.uk (50% discount on tickets on their own services bought in advance for 16-25 railcard holders).

To potentially save money on a train journey, use trainsplit.com to see if you can pay less by splitting the journey. Enter your journey details and get up the fare options, then select a fare and click on 'Proceed'. However, if you buy the tickets through the site they take a cut of 10% of any saving, so make a note of  the ticket breakdown and then buy the tickets on another site.
