The best overall web site for buying train tickets is possibly tpexpress.co.uk. They offer:
- no transaction fees
- a 50% discount on tickets on their own services bought in advance for 16-25 railcard holders
- one third discount on tickets on their own services bought in advance for groups of three or more
The only other site you should normally use is East Coast's to buy East Coast tickets. A group of three or more get a 20% discount if booked at lner.co.uk. Never, ever, use Trainline.
To potentially save money on a train journey, use trainsplit.com to see if you can pay less by splitting the journey. Enter your journey details and get up the fare options, then select a fare and click on 'Proceed'. However, if you buy the tickets through the site they take a cut of 10% of any saving, so make a note of the ticket breakdown and then buy the tickets on another site (eg tpexpress.co.uk).
