The best overall web site for buying train tickets is tpexpress.co.uk. They offer:
- no fees
- free first class post
- a 50% discount off their own services for 16-25 railcard holders
- Nectar points

The only time you should use any other site is if you want to buy a group ticket (three or more people) on East Coast services, in which case you book on their site (virgintrainseastcoast.com) to get a 25% discount. Never, ever, use Trainline.

To potentially save money on a train journey, use Raileasy to see if you can pay less by splitting the journey. Enter your journey details and get up the fare options, then select a fare and click on 'Proceed'. However, if you buy the tickets through the site they take a cut of 10% of any saving, so make a note of  the ticket breakdown and then buy the tickets on another site (eg tpexpress.co.uk).
